In response to concerns about the rapid spread of the new coronavirus infection in the prefecture, it was recently decided, in consultation with the executive committee and the venue, Gunma University, that the event will be held completely online.
We have decided to give up on holding the hybrid event at this time.
I appreciate that you have made preparations for your trip. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we hope that you will visit Gunma again next time.

32th Internal Combustion Engine Symposium
- Let's think about the origins of engines at the birthplace of Nakajima Airplanes -
It was first held in 1979 and has been held every year since 1, two of which have been held in Seoul and Jeju for internationalization purposes, and this year marks the 1984nd time. We are currently facing an unprecedented pandemic with no end in sight, and some countries have announced their plans for electrification ahead of schedule. At times like these, let's calmly and passionately discuss the path we should take in Ota, which can be called one of the hometowns of engine technology. To this end, one of the hallmarks of the meeting is that it ensures sufficient time for discussion. We are looking for a wide range of ambitious research results, including not only hybrid technology but also efforts to reduce CO2 emissions to zero. The format of the symposium will be a hybrid of face-to-face and remote sessions, and we look forward to your participation along with the local community.

A topic "SUBARU's past and future"
We will introduce the history of Nakajima Aircraft, the roots of SUBARU, and the horizontally opposed engine, which is one of SUBARU's signatures. Engines have evolved in line with the times and customer demands. About its evolution For 1 years, the EJ30 engine has been loved by everyone as SUBARU's flagship engine. The CB20 engine installed in the Levorg achieves both environmental performance and power performance. We will introduce the development and technology used in the new BRZ, including the story of the FA18 engine that makes driving fun and comfortable. Regarding the future, we would like to introduce our environmental initiatives using the contents of STEP 24, the medium-term management plan announced by our company.

A topic “The history and future of Niigata Diesel (marine engine)”
In 1919, during the time of our predecessor Niigata Iron Works, we succeeded in developing and commercializing Japan's first marine diesel engine. Since then, we have always had the foresight to continue providing society with products and technologies that are responsive to the times, tirelessly and sincerely. In 2019, we celebrated 100 years since the birth of Niigata Diesel, which was reborn as IHI Engine. We will continue to protect this Niigata brand.
Here, we will look back at Niigata Diesel's 100-year history and introduce the changes in engine output and efficiency improvements. We will also introduce our efforts to combat global warming, which is a new issue.

A topic “The Co-Optimization of Fuel and Engine Technologies on q Path to Decarbonization of the Transportation Sector”
The US Department of Energy Co-Optima initiative is delivering foundational science to develop fuel and engine technologies that will work in tandem to achieve efficiency, environmental and economic goals. This initiative brought together the diverse expertise of nine US national laboratories, more than 20 universities , and numerous industry stakeholders to accelerate, clean, affordable, and scalable higher-performance fuels and engines. This presentation will provide an overview of the initiative, key takeaways, and potential next steps on path to efficient decarbonization of the transportation sector.

1."Research on practical application of hydrogen engines" Akemi Ito (Tokyo City University)
Reducing carbon dioxide emissions is a major issue for heavy vehicles, which are difficult to electrify. On the other hand, if we look at hydrogen stations, there are currently only a little over 3 in operation compared to the approximately 100 gas stations, which is insufficient for private cars driving in any given area. In addition, the number of fuel cell vehicles that use hydrogen is 2019 as of 3695, which is insufficient for autonomous management of hydrogen stations. These problems can be solved by installing a hydrogen engine in a heavy vehicle that has a limited driving area and uses a large amount of fuel every day. Here, we introduce the hydrogen engine that we developed and discuss future challenges.
2."Technology for utilizing ammonia as fuel and hydrogen carrier" Mr. Nobushi Kanbara (Gifu University)
Green/blue ammonia has been positioned as one type of decarbonized energy as a fuel ammonia and a hydrogen carrier. In this lecture, we will outline the policy trends regarding ammonia, then explain its usage and new technologies, and discuss future prospects. We will review the production methods and costs of green/blue ammonia, the usage and fields of use of fuel ammonia, the usage and fields of use as a hydrogen carrier, and recent research and development trends. We also propose a system that recovers ammonia from factory wastewater and recycles it for energy. Finally, we will discuss the prospects and challenges of a decarbonized society using ammonia.
3."Perspectives for Ammonia Use in Spark-Ignition Internal Combustion Engines" Mr. Juan C. González Palencia (Gunma University)
Ammonia is one of the largest produced chemicals in the world. Recently, ammonia has gained attention as sustainable energy carrier. Ammonia combustion does not produce CO2 emissions; and can be used in internal combustion engines with relatively small modifications. However, due to its low burning velocity, stable operation of internal combustion engines using ammonia is challenging. From the point of view of exhaust emissions, ammonia contains nitrogen that causes the formation of fuel NOx. Furthermore, unburned ammonia presents a challenge, as adverse effects for human health for appear ammonia concentrations as low as 50 ppm. In this presentation, the strategies and challenges for ammonia use in spark-ignition internal combustion engines will be discussed - ■ Technical Session
