AVEC - International Symposium on Advanced Vehicle Control

The 1st AVEC symposium was initiated in 1992 by Vehicle Dynamics (named Chassis Control in the past) Technical Committee of Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan (JSAE) to break down the barrier between academia and industry, and then bring vehicle dynamicists from both societies, with approximately equal participations appearing from each, to frankly communicate and deeply discuss about knowledge and future perspectives on advanced vehicle control.

The 1st AVEC Symposium was held at Yokohama, Japan, 14-17 September 1992. AVEC stands for Advanced Vehicle Control. The word is inspired from a preposition in French, which means “with ….”, “together with …”, fitting well with the concept of the symposium.

As advances in electronic control technologies in 1980-1990, which was the era of active control of vehicles, active suspension control, 4WS, 4WD, DYC, handling and stability analysis were main progressive technologies in the field of automotive engineering since that time. AVEC has been positioned to be a place to bring innovation in the field of vehicle control.

AVEC has been the great support from international friends/colleagues in IAVSD societies. IAVSD has strongly supported all AVEC symposia. It was agreed that IAVSD Symposia will take place on odd years, AVEC Symposia on even years. Since 2014, AVEC has also started collaboration with the International Munich Chassis Symposium (chassis.tech plus). After having the 3rd AVEC Symposium in Aachen, Germany, 1996 which was the first time AVEC went to an international venue, the kind support by these communities has made AVEC grow up across different continents. Currently, AVEC has been recognized for its excellent reputation internationally in the field of vehicle dynamics and control. Up to now, AVEC has become a big family and there are more than 2,000 scientific papers published from AVEC symposia.

In 2014 when AVEC was held at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, the establishment of the permanent board of AVEC (AVEC Board) was proposed by the international scientific committee of AVEC’14 to maintain AVEC key concept, control the scientific quality as well as general organization of AVEC symposium, and guide the future direction of AVEC.

AVEC will remain to be an attractive place for next-generation flagship vehicle dynamicists to accelerate the research and development of chassis technologies and steer the direction of development of the automobiles and future mobility systems to the right way.
